North American Young Rheumatology Investigator Forum

We provide an excellent platform for clinical and research-oriented rheumatology fellows and junior faculty to have their clinical or basic science research efforts reviewed, critiqued and evaluated by an acclaimed geographically diverse panel of rheumatologists.

For over 15 years NYRIF has served as the launch pad for young fellows looking to showcase their work to leading faculty from around the world.

Poster Session

The top candidates chosen by the faculty will be invited to present their abstracts in the presence of their peers and the established, international judges either as an oral presentation or in a poster session.

Roundtable Discussions

Rheumatologists established in the paths of research, clinical practice and the pharmaceutical industry will lead an afternoon roundtable discussion to explore career opportunities and challenges within the field of rheumatology to contribute to more informed career decision-making choices.

Awards Banquet

The symposium will close with an awards banquet to present travel stipends of $250-$1000 to those candidates whose efforts have been considered by the faculty to have exceptional promise.

Submit your abstract during the CCR registration process using the Regstier & Submit Link. Accepted presentations will receive complementary registration for CCR East. Select Fellow or Resident at checkout and the conference fee is waived.

Ronald F. van Vollenhoven, M.D., Ph.D.

Professor of Rheumatology at Amsterdam University Medical Centers and Director of the Amsterdam Rheumatology & Immunology Center. He also leads the Department of Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology at AMC, the Department of Rheumatology at VUMC, and chairs the Rheumatology Research Council at READE. Additionally, he is the Editor-in-Chief of ”Lupus Science & Medicine” in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

E. Nigil Haroon, M.D., PhD, DM, MBA

An Associate Professor of Medicine and Rheumatology at Toronto Western Hospital, this individual also serves as the Head of the Division of Rheumatology at the University Health Network & Sinai Health in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Dinesh Khanna, M.D., M.Sc.

Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Michigan Medical Center, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Stephen Lindsey, M.D., MACR

Clinical Professor of Medicine and the Interim Chief of the Section of Rheumatology at LSU Health Science Center School of Medicine. He also serves as the Fellowship Program Director in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Philip Seo, M.D., M.H.S.

Rheumatology Division Editor of „Up To Date” and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, based in Baltimore, Maryland.

Alexis R. Ogdie-Beatty, MD., MSCE

Associate Professor of Medicine & Rheumatology and the Director of the Penn Psoriatic Arthritis Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania. She also holds the position of Associate Professor of Epidemiology in Biostatistics & Epidemiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine, located in Philadelphia, PA.

Ruth Ann Vleugels M.D., MPH, MBA

Ruth Ann Vleugels, MD, MPH, MBA is the Heidi and Scott C. Schuster Distinguished Chair in Dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where she serves as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Dermatology, located in Boston, Massachusetts

Goals and Objectives

The North American Young Rheumatology Investigator Forum was established to furnish clinical and research fellows in the field of rheumatology an informal, mentoring environment to present, discuss and have their original clinical or basic the research evaluated by an established, international panel of rheumatologists in the presence of their peers. NYRIF also advances attendees’ career decision-making the process by providing relevant and accurate information on the opportunities and challenges in the field of rheumatology so that attendees will be able to more appropriately evaluate their career choices and execute more informed career decisions. In addition, the unique environment fosters the development of valuable long-lasting networking connections.

At the conclusion of this forum the attendee should be able to:

  • Employ enhanced professional oral and written communication skills for use in designing research projects and in composing and presenting abstracts and case presentations.
  • Exchange ideas and knowledge with world-renowned rheumatologists as well as with peers to establish methods for interacting more effectively in the coordination of patient care.
  • Establish networking channels with peers and extramural expert faculty investigators for future collaborative research, consultative advice, and career path assistance.
  • Analyze current research activities within the basic science and clinical research areas of rheumatology to recognize exceptional original research achievement.
